Important message from the Wheeling Township Democrates Let Your Voices be Heard in Arlington Heights on Village Inclusiveness and Diversity Arlington Heights A copy of the proposed ordinance can be accessed via a link toward the end of the agenda. What: The Arlington Heights Village Board will be considering a proposed flag ordinance at its July 6th Board meeting. Why does it matter? Although the ordinance appears neutral, its primary purpose is to ensure that the Village will not display the Pride flag on any of its property. What you can do: Contact Mayor Hayes and Village Trustees and let them know that you oppose the ordinance. You can also speak out by attending the Board Meeting, which is July 6 at 7:30pm at Village Hall. Note that the flag ordinance is toward the end of the meeting. Let the board know that to prohibit the flying of the Pride flag on Village Property is inconsistent with the Village’s purported goal of increasing diversity and creating a welcoming and inclusive community. |
Important message from the Wheeling Township Democrats Let Your Voices be Heard in Mount Prospect on Village Inclusiveness and Diversity Mount Prospect What: The Village Board continues to receive feedback on the “Thin Blue Line” imagery on Mount Prospect Police Uniforms and artwork on Village property. Why does it matter? This symbol has become inextricably linked to white supremacists. Mount Prospect residents balked when vehicle stickers used the symbol, and the Village wisely offered an alternative. Despite having recognized the hurt this symbol may cause, the Village nevertheless has continued to use it and has incorporated it into police uniforms. What you can do: Contact Mayor Hoefert and Village Trustees and let them know that you oppose the use of this symbol by our Village. Contact information is available here. Please attend the Board’s Special Meeting tomorrow night, July 6, at 6pm and offer comments. |

Town Hall on Equity and Property Assessments with Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi Monday. July 19Time: 7 p.m.- 8 p.m. It’s hard to make property assessments sexy. But if we are serious about addressing equity issues, we need to talk about property assessments, and the structural iniquities that have been built into the assessments–and how the current Board of (Tax) Appeals is still protecting those iniquities. We all like talking about addressing structural racism and iniquity–but the real work of funding progressive government happens with the tax assessments. If anyone can make property assessments fascinating it is Cook County Assessor, Fritz Kaegi. And it’s because progressive government is possible when property assessments are fair. Come learn from Assessor Kaegi about the important work his office is doing to bring equity and justice to the Assessor’s office, how that progress is under threat, and what we can do about it. Your link to the online Town Hall will be in your auto-confirmation email. Please check your spam filters if you do not see the email. Help Defend Our Democracy – Fight state-level voter suppression lawsEvery ThursdayAT 2 PM CDT – 5 PM CDT To RSVP: https://www.mobilize.us/joansdemocracycafe/event/385315/… As we seek opportunities to help our nation through this trying time, pushing back on limitations to voting rights must come first – followed by helping to overcome any such limitations that are eventually put in place. Right now they are pursuing phone banking targeting several states, most noticeably voting rights in Texas and supporting HR1/S1 in Arizona. Initially we are helping with the Arizona phone banking effort every Thursday afternoon. We need more volunteers for that effort – and with even more help, we could expand to working the issues in Texas as well. If you need help getting started, please contact Ed.Spire@nonconfundar.org and he will assist you. This is something YOU can do to help your nation through this important struggle for democracy |
