NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issues February Team Meeting

Hi Fiscal and Economic Issues Team,
The NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issues Group will be back in Schaumburg at 7 pm on February 18th at the Schaumburg Township Library room. Our meetings typically last until about 9:30. Then many of us head out to Lou Malnati’s for a drink and a bite to eat.
We will update for the budget situation. The US is currently operating on continuing resolutions for about 7 of the appropriations bills that expires February 8th. As of this morning (2/1), it looked like we could have a partial government shutdown over Trump’s border wall. We will update in February whether we are shut down, on a continuing resolution, or on full year appropriations bills.
Governor-elect Pritzker is working on his budget proposal for the Illinois fiscal year that begins July 1, 2019. It probably won’t be available to discuss until about a week after our meeting on February 18th, so we will discuss it at our March meeting.
We will update for January jobs data and other economic information, e.g. the 1st estimate of 4th quarter GDP growth. As a NY Times article discussed this morning before the jobs numbers were reported, January’s report is messy. For instance, any furloughed federal employee who took a payroll job to earn some money during the shutdown had two jobs for purposes of the January data.
David Doney will also discuss gerrymandering.
