NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issue Team March Meeting

The NWSOFA Fiscal and Economic Issues Team meets monthly to educate its members on federal and Illinois issues. We update for monthly employment data, quarterly GDP data, and information on budget deficits. We focus on the facts–and how to discuss those facts. We have mobilized for actions on federal and Illinois legislation, usually in collaboration with other groups.Some topics for March include:– Initial 2018 real GDP growth numbers came in at 2.9% as we predicted. So it looks like we probably won’t get 3% growth for any year under President Trump.– The February jobs numbers come out next Friday, March 8th. It will be interesting to see how the shutdown has affected the employment numbers this year. My guess is that the monthly job growth numbers will be lower in February, but that the unemployment rate will go down slightly as well.– David is updating the slides regarding Gerrymandering.– We will be taking an initial look at Governor Pritzker’s proposed budget for Illinois for fiscal year (FY) 2020 (July 2019-June 2020), including reviews of the budget by various non-governmental organizations.– The White House plans to begin releasing its FY 2020 (October 2019-September 2020) budget on March 11th. The White House claims that the budget was delayed from its 1st Monday in February due date because of the government shutdown.
