McHenry County will be debating whether to become a Gun Santuary County this Tuesday,

Jan 3 at 8:30.

hearing will be on Tuesday, January 3rd at 8:30am, McHenry County Administration Building, 2nd floor Conference Room (not sure which one), 667 Ware Road, Woodstock, IL.

We need to say NO

To all Gun Violence Presvention Activisits: NWSOFA -Indivsible has issued an alarm regarding a renewed effort to make McHenry County a Gun Sanctuary County (GSC).

What has happened:  At the McHenry County Board’s first official County Board meeting with the new board members, a large group of county residents signed up and spoke at public comment concerning the Illinois legislature bill HB5855, the Protect Illinois Communities Act. Pam Althoff is the new Law & Govt Chair and Mike Shorten is the Vice-Chair. It seems they are both willing to have this topic on the next Law & Govt agenda. This happened two years ago and due to public comment and board member’s opinions, right minded county board members were able to keep it off the Law & Govt committee agenda, but this is a different board with different leadership.

The Ask: “We need people to speak at the Law & Govt meeting in January to state that the majority of the residents DO NOT WANT McHenry County to become a gun sanctuary county. Someone stated that 68 of the Illinois Counties are now gun sanctuary counties. We do not want Mchenry County to be the 69th!!

The best way to combat the public comment from those who want the gun sanctuary county is facts, statistics and personal stories.” – Wee have speakers lined up at this time.

Fill the room with ours and other GVP groups…. be a presence.

The Illinois legislature is reconvening next week in Springfield for a VERY BRIEF lame-duck session, with gun violence prevention at the top of the agenda. After dozens of mass shootings in Illinois this year, from Highland Park to Garfield Park and from Peoria to Washington Park, the momentum for bold legislative action is strong.

A Day of Action in the support of gun violence prevention has been scheduled for next Thursday, January 5th in support of the Protect Illinois Communities Act, (which would ban the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines, the weapons of choice in the deadliest mass shootings) as well as bills to toughen the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and Firearms Restraining Orders.

This is our chance to be heard in the Illinois legislature in this brief window of time before the current legislature expires and new legislators are sworn in!

Day of Action in support of the Protect Illinois Communities Act; rally, speaking program, time to meet with legislators; Lunch will be provided to those traveling on buses.

Action: End Public Money for Private Schools

Contact your state legislators and Governor Pritzker, urging them to end the Tax Credit for Private School Scholarships “Invest in Kids program”. Invest in Kids is really a “back door” voucher program that funnels up to $75 million a year of taxpayer money to private and religious schools. Donors who give to Invest in Kids receive a hefty tax break and Illinois loses much-needed revenue.

Invest in Kids is set to “sunset” in 2023 but pro-privatization forces, such as the Illinois Policy Institute, the Betsy DeVos-funded Illinois lobbying group American Federation for Children, Awake Illinois, Moms for Liberty, and others) are pushing to make Invest in Kids permanent and expand its scope. Support for tax credit vouchers is part of a movement, both nationally and in Illinois, to undermine public education.

Need more information? Illinois Families for Public Education, recently gave an excellent presentation on this issue. A recording of the presentation is available here and you can access the slides here. And a short FAQ on Invest in Kids is here.

Indivisible Chicago Alliance and Illinois Families for Public Schools are part of a large coalition working to sunset Invest in Kids. And we are asking your help to contact Governor Pritzker and your state rep and state senator to urge them to vote no on any extension or expansion of the voucher program. It’s important to do that this week, as Invest in Kids might be voted on during the lame duck session, Jan 4-7!

Are MAGA Groups Coming For YOUR School Board? Your Vote Can Stop Them!

In Illinois, the local elections take place in the spring after the general election. This year they are especially important.

School boards in many places have been the focus of attacks from MAGA far right-wing groups. These groups are also focused on getting their own members elected to school boards. That way, they can shape the schools’ curricula, and make sure that their groups’ views are also the ones creating the social norms.

2 leaders in Indivisible Illinois have been attending school board meetings in multiple districts. They also have done much outside research on these far right groups. They will share their expertise with us.

We will also hear from a member of a downstate school board. She has been on the board for almost 8 years. She will share her experiences and insight.
