The Illinois gun dealer licensing bill has been filed. Now we need to take action!
For more than a year, the Northwest Suburbs Organizing for Action (NWSOFA) has been educating and advocating about the need for gun dealer licensing in our state. Licensing and regulation of gun dealers would help stem the flow of illegal guns, keeping guns out of the hands of criminals.
This past week legislation for statewide gun dealer licensing in Illinois has been officially introduced. This law would allow for inspections of gun dealers, background checks of gun dealer employees, and measures such as videotaping of gun sales that would prevent straw purchases and stem the flow of illegal guns to criminals.
House Bill 1016 Amendment #1 is currently scheduled for a committee hearing on Tuesday, May 17th at 1pm in the House Criminal Judiciary committee.
This is a critical time for gaining support for this bill in Illinois.

As our Coalition Partners and we, NWSOFA know, we need hundreds of slips filed. The gun lobby generally gets hundreds of signatures, while we get only a handful. Let’s change that tide! Please get every member of your household to file a witness slip, and share this email with all of your networks in Illinois. We can file slips until the hearing date on Tuesday, May 17.

NWSOFA’s 1st Issue Team was right after the tragedy at Sandy Hook. The Gun Violence Prevention (GVP) team felt we needed accurate information and facts, events to teach others and actions we could take to make a difference on pushing for common sense gun violence prevention. That has been our basic format as new issues arose and team developed. We now have the GVP, ACA/Obamacare, Climate Change,Fiscal Issues and Stand with Women Issue Teams.Check out their individual pages to see all the events they have scheduled and to join the teams you want to make a difference with. Other teams are developing such as for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
OFA National coordinates “Days of Action” that Chapters across the country will all do on the same day. Each team also has local events and may work with affiliate organizations i.e. Sierra Club, Al Gore Reality Project, etc. to combine like-minded groups on a local, state or national event.
In this type of organization there are numerous ways you can be involved with the teams and in other roles.
