Sara Horan and Bill Davis – NWSOFA Chapter Co-Leads.
It Starts with US!

In the past week we’ve been reminded how cruel and short sighted our elected officials at the highest level can sometimes be. Right now it’s more important than ever to remember that change doesn’t always come down from the highest levels in Washington, D.C.

It can start with us.

It can start with local leaders who identify a problem in their communities, and set out to fix it — one phone call, one door knock, one volunteer shift at a time.

If you’re not already one of those leaders, you can be a part of the next generation of progressive leaders — but first, you need to get trained. Apply TODAY to be a 2018 OFA Summer Fellow.

As a Summer Fellow you’ll get : Six weeks of hands-on experience with a world-class training team, completely free of cost.

You’ll become a confident, effective organizer and be able to have persuasive conversations with your friends, family, and other community leaders about the issues that matter to you and the folks in your neighborhood.

OFA Summer Fellows have come from all backgrounds, ages, and experience levels. But they share one thing in common: A desire to make our communities better.

The application period is OPEN NOW.

Apply now:

and let’s get to work:

We are very excited to hear from Representative Mussman once again!
Last year in June Illinois State Representative Michelle Mussman talked about ongoing budget negotiations after we missed the May 31st deadline for passing the budget.  This month at 7 p.m. on July 9th we are bringing back Representative Mussman to again brief us on State budget issues. But this year she gets to talk about the successful passage of the fiscal year 2019 (July 2018-June 2019) budget by May 31st.
Expected topics of discussion include:
1. What got included in this year’s state budget and what got left out or cut.
2. What are the ongoing budget challenges and how might they be solved.
In addition, David Doney and Karl Faulstich will present a brief update on the U.S. economic and fiscal situation.
We look forward to a good discussion at the library this month.
After the meeting, many in the group will head over to Lou Malnati’s to continue our discussions. Feel free to join us at Lou’s too.

Gun Violence Prevention: Speaker Event

THURSDAY JULY 19

Northwest Suburban Democrats Office

1310 W. Northwest Highway,

Arlington Heights, IL 60004

Join us for our next in a series of speaker events!
Because of Newtown, and now because of Parkland, the NWSOFA GVP Issues group for the past 5 years has committed itself to become an even bolder advocate of change and action. We are determined to change the conversation surrounding gun violence in America, change the hearts of people we encounter through a spirit of volunteerism and kindness – and take action to change the laws to create safer communities for every family in America.
The GVP Issue team educates by having periodic informational meetings, collaborates with coalition non-partisan groups, such as local faith communities and Moms Demand Action and takes action by supporting the efforts of our youth and March for Our Lives and recruiting  legislators to build support for legislation to license gun dealers in Illinois, strengthen background checks and by raising community awareness through hosting vigils, using social media, writing letters to the editor and handing out fliers.
If you are interested in joining us and honoring all victims of gun violence through your individual actions, then we invite you to come to our monthly Gun Violence Prevention Issues Group Planning Meeting.
We hold a 90 minute meeting on the 3rd Thursday of every month (with some exceptions near holidays or if we are planning a public event that month). Please join us – together we can make a difference in creating safer communities for all Americans, including our law enforcement officers. Registration is preferred since seating is sometimes limited.
Thanks!
to help shine a light on the dark shadow of gun violence in America
