 “The politics of grievance”
Let’s discuss “The politics of grievance”.
So what is it with President *Rump’s lawsuits and the soon-to-be ex-President’s refusal to honor the election results?
What is it? It is another example of “The politics of grievance”.
The “stolen election” claim is just one of many examples of the anti-system politics that have created a level of distrust all across America, and simultaneously re-shaped the political parties over the past few decades.
The proof of “the politics of grievance” is never whether or not a statement is true — it can be laughably untrue. The proof is: can it catch political fire. For example the claim that Obama wasn’t born in the US was obviously bogus, but it was successfully used to question the effectiveness of his presidency.
.
We’ve been assaulted with dozens of examples. The “stolen election” is only the latest in a long line that has been used to build up political power for now and in the future. The more publicity each claim gets, the more it can effect future politics – including the elections in 2022.
What can we do about it?
First: “Breathe.” Anxiety doesn’t help.
Second: In the coming months pay less attention to the grievances. Focus on the good stuff that is happening.
Third: Take action steps. Always remember, this is a situation we can do something about. Our positive efforts will continue to remake American politics and a culture of inclusion.
Keep your vision alive. Keep your focus:
  • Securing Medicare for All to deal with the real needs of real people,
  • Preventing Gun Violence for a safer America,
  • Restoring our Democracy by eliminating Partisan Gerrymandering,
  • Stemming systemic marginalization, including for women, the LGBTQ community, Blacks and other minorities,
  • Promoting voter’s rights for a fairer America for all,
  • Protecting our Environment for ourselves, our kids and our grandkids.
So far we’ve created a strong movement and we have momentum of our own.
There will always be those who will cry out and use “The politics of grievance.” When their noise becomes too loud, refer to our First Suggestion above: Breathe!
Then join us.
We can do this. Our NWSOFA events and meetings are here to make things happen. Help us fight back against the noise.
(This use of “The Politics of Grievance” was inspired by a George Lakey article in Waging Nonviolence 11/26/2020)

NWSOFA Indivisible National Day of Action Call-A-Thons for Georgia
December 2 @ 5:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Georgia groups will be getting priority on phonebanking, but there are still some ways to make calls if you want to help.
We will be having two National Day of Action Call-A-Thons for Georgia.
There are other organizations that do have additional phonebanking opportunities, including Fair FightBlack Voters Matter, and both campaigns (Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock).
There is still a major need for phonebankers – this is still top priority, even if not on explicit Indivisible resources.
Phonebanking is proven to increase turnout the most out of all these resources, and remember that about 20% of the country does not have access to broadband. Sometimes phone calls are the only way people can get information about the election.
