Workplace policies too often don’t reflect today’s realities

Women are currently the main breadwinner in a record-high 40 percent of households, but on everything from paid leave to fair pay, our workplace policies too often don’t reflect today’s realities.
Our Stand with Women and Fiscal Issues Teams are taking action by continuing our Raise the Minimum Wage Petition gathering. Over 400,000 signatures have been collected we need 1 Million to let Congress know raising the Minimum Wage is good for women and all families and good for the economy.
Join us. We’ll be at the Arlington Hts and Schaumburg Libraries and at the Palatine Train Station. Call Sara 847-372-5594 to sign up for the location and time that are good for you. We’ll be in the entrance to the Arlington Height’s library from the garage by the elevators. Those going to the Schaumburg Library will be outside on the sidewalk leading to the main entrance but need to not be by the doors. Palatine Train Station-best time is during the morning commute from 7:00-8:30.
Call Sara to get copies of the petition and more details. 847-372-5594

The documentary chronicles his own journey while closely exploring the plight of other undocumented immigrants in America and the politics that surround the hotly contested issue of Illegal status.

By Kym Garnett, NWSOFA PR Lead:  RE: NWSOFA Chapter Meeting with Erik Carlson, OFA Midwest Regional Director, presentation of “Today’s Progressive Social Issues that Are Shaping Our Future Lives”
“NWSOFA had a great turnout to hear Erik Carlson present the latest updates on what OFA has accomplished and where the organization is headed.
During the presentation, Carlson cheerfully stated that there has been plenty of good news on the success of ACA with over 8 million people now having health insurance just through the state and national exchanges. He spoke on the major impact the new EPA regulations will have to reduce CO2 30% from coal power plants and on alleviating Climate Change. Other issues Carlson spoke on was the success of getting Marriage Equality passed in IL. Also, the real progress that has been made in the job market as over 9.4 million private sector jobs were added since the 2008/2009 great recession, where 8.8 million private sector jobs were lost. He also spoke on the deficit reduction from 1.4 Trillion to 492 Billion CBO projected this year. A 65 percent deficit reduction since 2009 budget year.
Meeting attendee and Issues Team Lead Natalie Warren stated, ” I was most impressed with the accomplishments of OFA over the past year. We have made a difference! ”  Social Media team lead Kathy Carter felt, “We are relevant, as NWSOFA our actions are consistent with American voters and our voice will be continued to be heard.” Linda Waycie said,” Erik Carlson had some good insights on the issues of OFA. I learned some new information.” Other meeting attendees were pleased to learn more about the structure and goals of OFA.

Other big issues moving forward nationally are Comprehensive Immigration Reform and Gun Violence Prevention. NWSOFA has a big Day of Action on June 28th with a press event/rally at Rep. Lipinski’s Office. Details are available at NWSOFA.org. With the latest horrific school shootings, over 74 since the tragedy at Sandy Hook, Gun Violence Prevention was another big issue. Renee Gladstone enumerated “I am interested in gun violence prevention and was glad to learn OFA will continue to work on this issue.”  It was an inspiring evening and as Mark Muehlhausen said, “OFA is an ongoing organization pushing our progressive agenda.”

Richard Martinez, whose son Christopher was shot and killed at UC Santa Barbara. Earlier that day, Mr. Martinez inspired Americans with this idea:

“Today, I’m going to ask every person I can find to send a postcard to every politician they can think of with three words on it:

Not One More.

People are looking for something to do. I’m asking people to stand up for something. Enough is enough.”

About NWSOFA

NWSOFA is a whole, diverse wonderful family of people who want to do more than talk about the social issues. We explore and dig deep on the facts and decide what actions we can take that can have an impact locally and nationally. NWSOFA members not only “talk the talk”, but we “walk the walk”.

All our teams have numerous events that will enlighten and inspire you and yes, challenge you to make the effort to make a difference.

We invite you to join us!

NWSOFA Shout Out

It’s time to Act .. It Is Time To Get Involved
Over the years the American Citizens have lost their voices, believing that we can not make a difference.  We have been beat down by the constant droning noise of the conservative right. This onslaught has made us like sheep .. afraid to express our views.  Not anymore!  OFA gives us back our voices and by working together we are making change one issue at a time. Together we can and will make a difference.

Thank You to our NWSOFA Issue Leads in 2013 !!
