After the Census Is Taken, What Happens Next?

Every ten years, following the census count, new boundary lines are determined for all levels of government- this process is called redistricting. This process has traditionally been done exclusively by lawmakers and has not included community input. With the new census data, Illinois lawmakers will begin changing the political boundaries in 2021.
When politicians draw the maps, it’s being done behind closed doors and without community input, which has resulted in divided communities and neighborhoods that are splintered, or are packed together, suppressing their power, their voices, and their votes. It has typically done to bias the representation for the benefit of the political party holding the majority. This is often called gerrymandering.

IT’S TIME TO PUT PEOPLE FIRST IN THE ILLINOIS REDISTRICTING PROCESS

Join the NWSOFA as we host Liliana Scales, Advocacy Director for Change Illinois, on Thursday, January 28, at 7pm for an explanation of this process.
