The NWSOFA Fiscal and Economics group had some great discussions on January 16th at the Arlington Heights library and in Schaumburg on Monday, February 17th.  Let’s keep up the momentum with another great meeting on Monday, March 23rd.
————
The mission of the Fiscal and Economic issues group is to help participants understand the economic and budgetary facts at the federal and state level, to help them sharpen their arguments and communicate to their audience, directly or via social media. The co-leads prepare a comprehensive presentation monthly using data from definitive sources, and the presentation and discussion is often filmed and shared on social media. Topics typically include trends in key economic variables, budget deficits, income inequality, healthcare, and key topics in the news.
———-
Normally we spend substantial time going over historical fiscal and economic data.  This month will be different, as the historical data does not reflect the current reality of new unemployment filings and the current recession risk.  Therefore we expect to spend most of the meeting discussing the coronavirus pandemic and recommendations for dealing with both its health and economic effects, including bills that have been passed by Congress as well as other measures still being negotiated.
While we have spent some time gathering information, things change daily if not hourly and we do not claim to have all the answers.  We welcome your thoughts at next Monday’s teleconference.
Please join us on Monday via your phone while following along with the PowerPoint on your computer.
PS – I haven’t figured out how to share Double Stuffed Oreos and waters on a teleconference.  Sorry.

Some data releases include:
———-
1) The February employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) showed strong job growth.  Note that the surveys were conducted mid month and don’t reflect recent government actions, including mass layoffs of restaurant and bar employees..

———-
2) The 2nd estimate of 4th quarter 2019 real GDP growth was unchanged at 2.1%.   First quarter 2020 real GDP growth estimates won’t be available until the end of April.
