On Wednesday, September 10 at 7:00 PM CDT, Building Bridges Not Walls will feature Doug Day, who will share insights from a proposed conflict resolution unit he has developed.
Doug brings over 30 years of experience teaching Speech Communications at the college level, and he plans to deliver a 25-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute interactive Q&A session.

His approach emphasizes practical strategies for navigating disagreements in constructive and respectful ways. In his talk, Doug will outline the differences between clean fighting and dirty fighting, two contrasting styles of conflict engagement. Clean fighting involves clear, respectful communication such as using “I” statements, actively listening, and focusing on ideas or behaviors rather than personal attacks.
It creates space for both sides to be fully heard and understood, even while acknowledging strong feelings. In contrast, dirty fighting relies on dismissive, hurtful, or manipulative behaviors such as name-calling, stonewalling, or diverting attention to unrelated grievances. By highlighting these patterns and offering tools for healthier communication.
Doug’s presentation will show how conflicts—whether in families, workplaces, or communities—can be reframed as opportunities for growth rather than division. Participants will walk away with practical techniques to recognize destructive patterns and move toward more productive, respectful dialogue.
