We’re Back…..
We’re Back…
Wins and Losses Headline the Month!
How does it happen… a historic night at the polls as most Progressive Issues on the ballots are voted in favor of by approximately 67% of the voters and yet … the Democrats took a pounding at the polls.  There must be a disconnect between the great work you are all doing as OFA and the messages that our Progressive candidates were able to articulate. So we are rolling up our sleeves to make sure that our issues can be championed at the 2012 elections.
We will re-engage and work harder to win the hearts and minds of those that voted for: Marriage Equality, ACA Healthcare reform, Climate Change, Minimum Wage, Gun Violence Prevention, Equal Pay for Equal Work for Women, and Comprehensive Immigration Reform.
For November and December we will continue to combine issue events and chapter events as we re-engage and recharge after the elections  Each issue team will keep the focus on moving their issues front and center of our local and national politicians.

Fiscal and Economic Issues Discussion Group Meeting.

Typical Agenda topic for the Month are:

Please Attend the Monthly Fiscal and Economic Issues Discussion Group Meeting. We will have our standard update of the economy, both jobs and GDP. We will also continue our discussions of the economic recovery and policy issues that affect the recovery.

Some economic highlights:

Jobs Recovery

  • 214,000 jobs added in September; 2.6 million in last 12 months
  • September and August employment revised up by 31,000 jobs

Unemployment rate:

  • nationally at 5.8% in October, down 1.3% in the past year and continues to trend down from its high of 10.0% in October 2009..
  • IL unemployment rate was 6.6% in September, down from 6.7% in August, down from 6.8% in July, 7.1% in June, 7.5% in May, 7.9% in April, 8.4% in March and 8.7% in Feb, down from 9.2% in August 2013 and  trending down from its high of 11.4%
  • GDP growth:
    • 35.% in the 3rd quarter and 4.6% in 2nd quarter, up from minus 2.1% in 1st quarter.  It appears that the negative 1st quarter result was just an anomaly, primarily due to the harsh winter in much of the country.
  • Budget Deficits – Historical and Projected

As always this is a discussion group .. bring your articles and your wits to talk about all sides of the issues.

The League of Women Voters Arlington Heights Area public program,
MONEY IN POLITICS Featuring the film “CITIZEN KOCH”
The money spent on this year’s mid-term elections is all over the news. Hundreds of millions spent on Senate races. So this month’s program for members and the public will focus on the effects on our political process of the Supreme Court decisions in the Citizens United (corporate contributions allowed) and this April’s McCutcheon (no more limits on individual contributions) cases.
The media is making the general public aware of the millions being spent in battleground states. By mid-November, everyone will see the results of this spending, making clear the need for campaign finance reform.
This timely topic will appeal to all concerned citizens!

It’s time to Act .. It Is Time To Get Involved
Over the years the American Citizens have lost their voices, believing that we can not make a difference.  We have been beat down by the constant droning noise of the conservative right. This onslaught has made us like sheep .. afraid to express our views.  Not anymore!  OFA gives us back our voices and by working together we are making change one issue at a time. Together we can and will make a difference.
