Why Are State Legislatures Important to the Balance of Power?

What Does Each Level of Government Do? Find out on!

Monday, January 19, 7:30 – 9pm, on Zoom

Join Indivisible Illinois for a discussion on what each level of government does and the importance of state legislatures in the balance of power.

It’s a little known fact that our lives are impacted more by what happens in our state legislatures than by the federal government, but so few voters even know who their elected state legislators are. This is one of the important topics that will be addressed by our guests, Jess Piper and Erica Bray-Parker.

Jess Piper spent 16 years as a high school literature teacher. She then decided to run as a Democrat for state legislature in a red rural district in Missouri, so voters in her district would have the choice to vote for a Democrat. Jess was not elected, but she has used the experience to organize progressives in rural Missouri. Jess is the Executive Director for Blue Missouri. Her Substack newsletter, “The View From Rural Missouri,” has >85,000 followers. Ms Piper will talk about the value of Democrats running for state legislature, even in bright red districts.

Erica Bray-Parker is currently running for state representative. She is a high school civics and psychology teacher and has been on the Wheaton City Council since 2019. As a civics teacher, Erica has cultivated an expertise in the workings of government at the varied levels (local, state and federal). She will share her expertise with us, so we know what each level of government is responsible for.

With primary elections coming up in less than two months, this is important information for all of us to know as we head into election season. Just click on the button below to sign up for this important meeting!
