Argue Less, Influence More: Skills for Better Conversations When discussing politics

Monday, March 23rd @ 5:00 pm Central / 6:00 pm Eastern – ZOOM

**Vision Forward 2.0** is a coordinated set of programs designed to help volunteers, community members, and pro‑democracy conversational activists communicate with clarity, calm, and persuasion—especially in moments clouded by confusion, misinformation, or division.

## “What I Wish I Would of Said” – Part 4

These programs are **practical, skills‑based**, and rooted in **real conversations** happening in our communities right now.

## Learning Labs Series: What We Do

Our Learning Labs Series offers **hands‑on workshops** where volunteers, community leaders, and conversational activists come together to **practice productive, empathetic dialogues** with people holding different views.

This four‑week workshop will help you **argue less and influence more**. Through interactive exercises and real‑world examples, you’ll practice how to:

– Have you ever wished you could retract what you just said?

– Avoid argument traps

– Recover from “stuck” dialogs

– Steer conversations to “move the needle” in the right direction

– Preserve relationships while communicating values effectively

You’ll begin with non‑political topics and gradually apply your new skills to more challenging discussions—at home, at work, and in civic conversations. As these tools become second nature, your confidence and influence will grow, allowing your **pro‑democracy voice** to be both effective and authentic.

#### About the Presenter

**Kara Kelly** is a **Communication Coach** who helps people build skills for better conversations to enhance their influence and strengthen their relationships. Kara’s passion lies in helping individuals and teams master the art of meaningful, persuasive, and relationship‑driven communication.

Homework from the previous session:

1. Watch Celeste Headlee – How to Make America Talk Again (TEDx Seattle)

2. Practice: At least 3 times, hold a conversation where you are intentionally using the skills we have learned. Watch for (and avoid) arguments.

LEARNING LABS WORKSHOP SERIES: “What I wish I would have said”

Argue Less, Influence More: Skills for Better Conversations

When discussing politics,

Have you ever wished you could retract what you just said?

Have you ever watched your conversations go awry with just one comment?

Do you wish the other person would just listen to your point of view?

Do you experience “stuck” dialogs that go back-and-forth without meaningful progress?

Do you suspect the other person is stating things contrary to their values?

Are you concerned that your relationship is being negatively impacted?

“Data Centers in Illinois“

With Sally Burgess from Sierra Club

Tuesday, March 24th @7:00 pm Central / 8:00 pm Eastern – ZOOM

_ Join us Tuesday, March 24th at 7:00 PM CDT for our next NWSOFA-Indivisible Climate and Environmental Team Zoom meeting, featuring a special presentation by Sally Burgess from Sierra Club Illinois._

Sally will lead an in-depth discussion about the rapid growth of data centers in Illinois—how they work, their impact on local energy use, and what communities can do to ensure these facilities expand responsibly.

As data centers continue to multiply across our region to power AI, cloud services, and online storage, their immense energy and water demands raise new environmental concerns.

Sally will help us understand how Illinois policy, renewable energy investments, and local advocacy intersect to influence the sustainability of these projects.

This meeting will also include updates on NWSOFA-Indivisible’s ongoing climate initiatives and opportunities to take action at both local and state levels.

Whether you’re new to climate activism or a longtime participant, this session will provide valuable insights and ways to make a difference.

We hope you’ll join us for this informative and timely discussion with Sally Burgess and be part of shaping a cleaner, more sustainable future for our communities.

Sorting Soup: A Book Club for Resistance & Resilience

THURSDAYS / SUNDAYS – Zoom .. Thursday’s @5:00 / Sunday’s @4PM CT Zoom

Feeling overwhelmed by the scale of what we’re facing? You’re not alone. That’s why Sorting Soup has evolved into a space where we do more than just talk about the news—we read the blueprints, name the patterns, and build the knowledge we need to resist authoritarianism with clarity and purpose.

Sunday Seconds: Go Deeper, Catch Up, or Just Breathe

Missed Thursday? Need more time with the material? Just want to process with a smaller, quieter group? That’s what Sunday Seconds is for. Every Sunday morning, we reconvene to revisit the previous week’s reading in greater depth. We slow down, pull out the quotes that hit hardest, highlight contributions from first-time speakers, and make space for the reflections that didn’t quite fit on Thursday night.

From Illinois to the Nation

Local Voices-National Impact

Thursday, March 26 @7PM Central / 8PM Eastern Zoom

Join us Thursday at 7:00 PM CDT for our Zoom Gun Violence Prevention meeting. We’ll be joined by Maria Peterson, who will discuss the outcomes of the Primary election and what they mean as we look ahead to the Midterm elections in November.

We’ll also take time to talk about how we can move forward from here, including the organizing, outreach, and advocacy needed to keep momentum going. This conversation will help us think strategically about the months ahead and how we can stay engaged.

In addition, we’ll share an update on the RIFL bill and discuss the upcoming day of advocacy in Springfield, now scheduled for May 8th. This will be an important chance to hear where things stand and how we can continue pushing for progress.

Please plan to join us for this important discussion and bring your questions, ideas, and energy. Together, we can stay informed and keep building toward safer communities.

We encourage everyone to **join the discussion, ask questions, and help build momentum** for stronger gun safety action in 2026 and beyond. You won’t want to miss this inspiring conversation with a candidate who truly understands what’s at stake.
