Burnout
The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
Sunday 9/20 Bookclub 9am central – ZOOM
_This fall, The Ladle & Literature Society—also known as the Sorting Soup Book Club—this weekend 9/20 has only one 9 an bool club.. the 4 pm is canceled ..one week only ..
_We’ll gather around books that take both the personal toll of organizing and the practical work of winning seriously.
*Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle* by Emily and Amelia Nagoski explores why stress lingers in our bodies long after the immediate crisis has passed, and how we can interrupt the cycle through rest, connection, movement, boundaries, and joy. Organizers are regularly asked to absorb urgency, outrage, grief, and other people’s needs; without ways to process that load, exhaustion becomes a predictable political outcome.
This discussion is for anyone who wants to build a practice of care sturdy enough to support the long haul—because a movement cannot afford to treat its people as disposable.
It is an antidote to doomscrolling and magical thinking: organized people change what looks inevitable by showing up, making a plan, and bringing others with them.

Sorting the Firehose of Information:
Thursday at 5 pm Central / 6pm eastern
_Every Thursday at 5:00 p.m. CDT, Sorting Soup—our Thursday edition—is a weekly space to make sense of the nonstop firehose of news. Together, we sort through major headlines, court decisions, policy developments, cultural moments, and the stories competing for our attention. Bring your questions, useful context, and curiosity as we distinguish what is urgent, what is meaningful, and what deserves a closer look._
Sorting Soup is also a place to process what the news brings up. Through honest conversation and critical thinking, we make room for frustration, concern, hope, and determination—while connecting national developments to the realities in our own communities. The aim is not simply to keep up, but to leave with clearer shared understanding and a stronger sense of what we can do next.
Each gathering continues our focus on Self-Care as Radical Resistance. We will share a short self-care message recognizing that rest, boundaries, connection, nourishment, and care for our well-being are not distractions from meaningful work; they are how we sustain ourselves and one another for the long haul.
Through the November 3 midterm elections, we will also emphasize community-facing voter engagement. We’ll highlight tabling opportunities, explore adaptable voter-education tools, and identify practical calls to action each week—from sharing trustworthy information and inviting neighbors into the work to helping build the participation essential to a healthy democracy.

The NWSOFA-Indivisible Stand With Women Team invites you to attend, bring a friend, and consider donating stamps (postcard stamps) funds for stamps … Together to write personal, powerful postcards that encourage voters to participate—and every card is one more reminder that their voice matters._
We’ll begin with a brief 10–15 minute speaker presentation on women’s rights and the challenges facing women today, helping connect the importance of this election to the postcards we will write. Then we’ll settle in with some quiet, upbeat background music, good conversation, and a meaningful way to take action together.
Postcard writers will have three approved message scripts to choose from, making it easy for everyone to participate while ensuring the postcards contain the required election outreach language.
Attend, bring a friend, and consider donating stamps (postcard stamps) funds for stamps.. We will collect completed postcards at the event so they can be safely held and mailed on the correct date._
Anyone who would like to keep writing at home may take additional unwritten cards and scripts with them.

Two sessions on Sunday
A) Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
B) This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler
Sundays Bookclub @9am & 5pm central – ZOOM
This fall, The Ladle & Literature Society—also known as the Sorting Soup Book Club—offers two routes into the work of sustaining ourselves and building power. Beginning Sunday, August 30, we’ll gather around books that take both the personal toll of organizing and the practical work of winning seriously. Choose the conversation that best meets the moment—or join both, because the mess is multifaceted and, frankly, so are we.

This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler
If self-care is not your jam, *This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler offers a clear-eyed, battle-tested guide to turning frustration into durable political power. Drawing on organizing lessons from Wisconsin and beyond, Wikler emphasizes disciplined planning, real relationships, broad coalitions, and the unglamorous infrastructure required to win. It is an antidote to doomscrolling and magical thinking: organized people change what looks inevitable by showing up, making a plan, and bringing others with them. Join *Burnout* on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. CST, beginning August 30, or *This Is the Plan* on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. CST.
