“Common Ground”
Powerful sequel to “Kiss the Ground”
Tuesday, August 25 @ 7pm Central / 8pm Eastern -ZOOM
Join NWSOFA–Indivisible’s Climate and Environment Team on Tuesday, August 25 at 7:00 p.m. CDT for a Zoom screening and discussion of “Common Ground”, the powerful sequel to “Kiss the Ground” (screened last month).
_Blending investigative reporting with personal stories from people on the front lines of the food movement, Common Ground examines the money, power, and political choices behind America’s broken food system. It confronts the inequities that have shaped modern agriculture—and the harm those systems cause to farmers, workers, communities, and our environment._
The film also offers hope. Meet a diverse group of farmers advancing regenerative agriculture: practical approaches that can restore soil, protect public health, strengthen local economies, and help address the climate crisis.
_Come watch, learn, and talk with fellow community members about how a healthier, fairer food system can be part of a more sustainable future._

“The Sins of Our Fathers”
Race, Religion, and the Rise of Trump
screening & discussion
“with Matthew Pridgen”
Wednesday, August 26th @7pm Central / 8pm Eastern l ZOOM
_Join NWSOFA next Wednesday evening for a special Zoom screening of The Sins of Our Fathers: Race, Religion, and the Rise of Trump. This powerful feature-length documentary asks how the white Christian church helped create the conditions for modern Christian nationalism._
The film examines the ways biblical arguments have been used throughout U.S. history to justify slavery, Jim Crow, and systemic racism. Writer and narrator Matthew Pridgen shares his own journey as an evangelical Christian and lifelong Republican who voted for Trump in 2016 before confronting the political weaponization of his faith tradition.
Director Joey Papa calls the film “a heart cry to the White Christian community that has wholeheartedly embraced a man who embodies everything we claim to stand against.” It is a timely opportunity for reflection, learning, and honest conversation about race, religion, democracy, and power.
_Please stay after the screening for a live Q&A with Matthew Pridgen. Join us on Zoom Wednesday, August 26, at 7:00 PM CDT._

Join Sorting Soup’s
Sorting the Firehose of Information:
Thursday at 5 pm Central / 6pm eastern
Sorting Soup is our weekly gathering where we make sense of the “firehose of information” — serving up news, court cases, and cultural sparks to find the truth (and maybe a little humor) in the mix.
Thursdays @5PM — we ladle out the week’s headlines, taste-test the facts, and stir up action steps for change.
At the heart of Sorting Soup is the belief that Self‑Care is Radical Resistance — because even revolutions need nourishment.
Like the story of Stone Soup, everyone brings something to the pot: knowledge, curiosity, and the courage to show up.

Legislative Updates & Candidate Spotlight Series
Thursday 8/27 @ 7pm Central / 8pm eastern
Join us this Thursday, August 27 at 7:00 PM CDT for NWSOFA-Indivisible’s Gun Violence Prevention Zoom (GVP) August meeting. We’ll share timely updates on Illinois and national gun-violence-prevention legislation—and discuss what advocates can do to keep the momentum moving.
Over the next three meetings, we’ll also feature candidate speakers whose leadership can help advance safer communities and stronger gun-safety laws.
This Thursday, August 27th, we are excited to welcome Jenny Levin, a candidate for the Illinois State Representative seat currently held by Nabeela Syed. Jenny spoke with our GVP group last winter and was outstanding; we look forward to hearing from her again.
Please join us Thursday evening, bring your questions, and invite others who care about preventing gun violence and protecting Illinois families.

Join The Literature & Ladle Society (Book Club)
Two sessions on Sunday
A) Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
B) his Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler
Sundays Bookclub @9am & 5pm central – ZOOM
This fall, The Ladle & Literature Society—also known as the Sorting Soup Book Club—offers two routes into the work of sustaining ourselves and building power. Beginning Sunday, August 30, we’ll gather around books that take both the personal toll of organizing and the practical work of winning seriously. Choose the conversation that best meets the moment—or join both, because the mess is multifaceted and, frankly, so are we.
Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle
*Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle* by Emily and Amelia Nagoski explores why stress lingers in our bodies long after the immediate crisis has passed, and how we can interrupt the cycle through rest, connection, movement, boundaries, and joy. Organizers are regularly asked to absorb urgency, outrage, grief, and other people’s needs; without ways to process that load, exhaustion becomes a predictable political outcome. This discussion is for anyone who wants to build a practice of care sturdy enough to support the long haul—because a movement cannot afford to treat its people as disposable.
This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler
If self-care is not your jam, *This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler offers a clear-eyed, battle-tested guide to turning frustration into durable political power. Drawing on organizing lessons from Wisconsin and beyond, Wikler emphasizes disciplined planning, real relationships, broad coalitions, and the unglamorous infrastructure required to win. It is an antidote to doomscrolling and magical thinking: organized people change what looks inevitable by showing up, making a plan, and bringing others with them. Join *Burnout* on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. CST, beginning August 30, or *This Is the Plan* on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. CST.
