What I Wish I Would of Said with Kara Kelly
Skills 4 more Effective Conversations
Monday , April 27th @5pm Central / 6 pm Eastern
The “What I Wish I Would Have Said Series” was comprised of four sessions and began in January 2026. Sessions were held on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. The previous sessions, held on 26 Jan, 9 Feb and 9 March, 23 March can be found on the NWSOFA YouTube Channel (798) NWSOFA – YouTube. “What I Wish I Would Have Said” advance series and practice sessions are in the works.
Homework from last session:
– 1. Watch Jefferson Fisher – My Top 3 Argument Responses: Best Argument Responses to Stay Calm & Assertive
– 2. At least 3 times, hold a conversation where you are intentionally using the skills we have learned. Watch for (and avoid) arguments
WHAT I WISH I WOULD HAVE SAID OFFICE HOURS SESSION: In this session bring your scenarios (and exact comments from others) and any questions you may have and we will apply the 4 Skills and the “7 Ways to Avoid an Argument” to construct appropriate responses that “move the needle”.
This workshop series will help you learn and practice skills to improve your conversations. We will learn to avoid arguments, recover from “stuck” dialogs, & steer conversations so that you “move the needle” in the right direction, all while preserving your relationship. The workshops are a mix of concepts, examples, & practice.
Argue Less, Influence More: Skills for Better Conversations
When discussing politics:
– Have you ever wished you could retract what you just said?
– Have you ever watched your conversations go awry with just one comment?
– Do you wish the other person would just listen to your point of view?
– Do you experience “stuck” dialogs that go back-and-forth without meaningful progress?
– Do you suspect the other person is stating things contrary to their values?
– Are you concerned that your relationship is being negatively impacted?
This workshop series will help you learn and practice skills to improve your conversations. We will learn to avoid arguments, recover from “stuck” dialogs, and steer conversations so that you “move the needle” in the right direction, all the while preserving the relationship. We will start with non-political topics and conversations first.

With Ed Spire, Restore Our Democracy Lead
Trump’s Presidency and the New Resistance to Strongman Politics
When Authoritarianism Stops Being Abstract
Monday , April 27th @7pm Central / 8 pm Eastern
_For years, warnings about democratic erosion felt abstract. Under Donald Trump, authoritarian tactics have become concrete — attacks on institutions, governing by personal decree, escalating tariff wars, and the extreme deployment of military force._
That concreteness is frightening many citizens, elites, and institutions into action, both in the US and in Europe.
What we are witnessing has a name: authoritarianism. Scholars of democracy recognize the playbook — undermine courts, intimidate the press, concentrate power in one person, and rule by fear and loyalty rather than law.
Millions of Americans are seeing it in real time, and resistance is growing, not shrinking.
From courtrooms to town squares to legislative chambers — here at home and across Europe — people who once stayed on the sidelines are stepping forward. The question is no longer whether people are alarmed. It is how we turn that alarm into organized, sustained power.
Come learn how this is happening — and how you can help make it happen faster.

“Climate Change 2026: Simple, Serious, Solvable“
Tuesday, April 28th @7pm Central / 8 pm Eastern
_ Simple, Serious, Solvable.” We’re thrilled to welcome former FOX2 Detroit Chief Meteorologist Chris Edwards as our guest speaker for an in-depth look at the science — and the solutions — behind today’s climate crisis_
Cuts through the Noise:
Chris brings over 40 years of experience in weather reporting and climate study, including his early years at The Weather Channel in the 1980s. His fact-based approach cuts through the noise and delivers a clear-eyed look at the real impacts climate change is having right now — and what the data actually tells us.
Concrete, Actionable Steps:
But this isn’t just about the problem — it’s about what we can do. Chris will walk us through practical solutions and concrete, actionable steps that each of us can take to address these global challenges, no matter where we live or what resources we have.
Don’t miss this one. Bring your questions — this is exactly the kind of informed, grounded conversation our movement needs right now.

“THE AMERICAN DREAM: DETAINED“
Wednesday, April 29th @7:30pm Central / 8:30pm Eastern
_Stand With Women invites you to our monthly meeting, an urgent and compassionate discussion about asylum, detention, and the families left behind._
Good news: On April 24, a federal appeals court blocked a Trump Administration order that sought to suspend asylum protections and immediately deport migrants. Eva will share new updates on what this decision could mean for her husband’s asylum case, their future, and the fight for all asylum seekers in our country.
Eva Shares her Story
Eva shared her heartbreaking story with us last Wednesday. She and her husband are not defeated. We witnessed her strength, resolve, and deep love as they continue striving for the American Dream he wanted so badly. There are thousands of stories like theirs, and we hope to lift up more of them in the months ahead.
Constance Cameron, a retired teacher and friend who has walked with Eva through her husband’s ICE detention crisis, will share what she has learned about detention facility conditions, immigration court obstacles, and the emotional and financial toll on families left behind. Together, we will discuss how wives, mothers, children, and loved ones cope when their family member and breadwinner is taken from them.
We will also take time to hear from you:
– What brings you to Stand With Women meetings and events?
– What topics or issues do you want us to explore this year?
– What causes and actions should SWW take on to make a difference in the lives of others?
Keep your passion and compassion alive. Thank you for all you do.
_See you Wednesday, Kathy and Michelle… Stand With Women Co-Leads_

Thursdays @5PM — we ladle out the week’s headlines, taste-test the facts, and stir up action steps for change.
At the heart of Sorting Soup is the belief that Self‑Care is Radical Resistance — because even revolutions need nourishment.

SpelHouse Edition One Day Is Now:
Young Voices Build Stronger Democracies“
Thursday, April 30 @7pm Central / 8 pm Eastern
_HBCUs represent just 3% of American colleges and universities — yet they have graduated 1 million Black students since 1984, producing 80% of all Black judges, 40% of all Black engineers, and 40% of all Black members of Congress. These institutions are not footnotes in American higher education. They are its backbone, and right now, they are under direct assault._
On Thursday, April 30 at 7 PM CT, NWSOFA-Indivisible invites you to join a vital Zoom conversation: “One Day is Now: Young Voices Build Stronger Democracies — SpelHouse Edition.” Four incoming Spelman students and community advocates will speak candidly about what is at stake — from the Republican-backed “Big Beautiful Bill” cutting pathways for Black students, to the systematic erasure of Black history from classrooms across the country. This is the conversation progressive communities across the country need to be having.
The discussion will move through four urgent themes:
– the real-world damage of current federal policy on HBCU funding,
– where Black voters stand politically and why it matters to all of us,
– the war being waged on what our children are allowed to learn,
– what a genuine path forward looks like for institutions that have built generations of American leadership.
These are young women who are living these questions in real time, and their clarity is both sobering and galvanizing.
Bring your curiosity, your concern, and your community. Register for the Zoom and join NWSOFA-Indivisible on April 30 to hear from the voices who will shape what comes next — and to recommit to protecting the institutions and histories that make a stronger democracy possible for all of us.
_Note: (Zoom link and joining information will be provided to all attendees after they RSVP on this page.)

Phone Bank to Help Elect Progressive Candidates to the
Georgia Supreme Court
Saturday, May 3rd @4pm Central / 5 pm Eastern
There is a monumental Supreme Court election happening in Georgia. There are 2 progressive candidates that are running against 2 of the right-wing incumbents who reinstated Georgia’s 6-week abortion ban.
In these times, the judiciary has worked to both save democracy and stifle democracy. We know the importance of getting judges in place that reflect progressive values. This is especially true with state Supreme Courts. (Look at what is happening in Virginia currently. The state Supreme Court has put a hold on Redistricting after the people in the state voted for it.)
The Georgia Supreme Court candidates are: Miracle Rankin, a former president of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, and former Democratic state Sen. Jen Jordan. They have been endorsed by Planned Parenthood, and are supported by the Georgia Democratic party.

– Champaign County Indivisible
– Indivisible Greater West Loop

The charter airline that the university uses to transport their football team, and both the women’s and men’s basketball teams, Global X, is also used by ICE and CBP to transport them and the immigrants in their custody. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign also has contracts with other corporations that contract with ICE and CBP.
A consortium of some of unions that represent UIUC employees are trying to push the administration to cancel their contrats with these companies, and also asking that the administration enact policies to keep students/faculty/staff safe. There is more info in the text of the petition:
