Sundays Bookclub 5pm central – ZOOM

This fall, The Ladle & Literature Society—also known as the Sorting Soup Book Club—offers:

This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler

If self-care is not your jam, *This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler offers a clear-eyed, battle-tested guide to turning frustration into durable political power. Drawing on organizing lessons from Wisconsin and beyond, Wikler emphasizes disciplined planning, real relationships, broad coalitions, and the unglamorous infrastructure required to win.

It is an antidote to doomscrolling and magical thinking: organized people change what looks inevitable by showing up, making a plan, and bringing others with them.

Fiscal & Economic August Review

“13 Yrs Running”

Tuesday Sept 15th @7pm Central / 8pm Eastern l ZOOM

_Tuesday, September 15th @ 7 PM CDT — Zoom: Fiscal & Economic August Review — 13 Yrs Running — Longest-Running U.S. Economic Discussion. Chaos Continues: Wars, Jobs, Tariff Wars, ICE, Health Care Crisis, Affordability / Inflation & Debt_

Bureau of Labor Statistics Data Sources for August

– nonfarm payrolls increased by 162,000 jobs in August—above the average monthly gain of 31,000 over the prior 12 months.

– The unemployment rate held at 4.1%, with about 7.0 million people unemployed.[bls]

– The labor force grew by 683,000 people in August, lifting labor-force participation to 61.6%.

– The employment-to-population ratio edged up to 59.1%, but participation remains 0.5 percentage point below where it stood in January.[bls]

– Average hourly pay rose 10 cents in August to $37.75. Over the past year, average hourly earnings increased 3.1%. l

There are still serious signs of strain beneath the headline figures. About 1.9 million people were unemployed for 27 weeks or longer—27.0% of all unemployed people. Another 5.7 million people were outside the labor force but said they wanted a job, while 1.7 million were marginally attached to the labor force.[bls]

Affordability remains a crisis for working families. The most recent available Consumer Price Index report showed prices rising 3.4% over the 12 months through July. Food prices were up 3.0%, shelter was up 3.2%, and energy was up 14.7% over the year, including a 24.6% increase in gasoline prices.

We’ll unpack what the August jobs and inflation reports really show, how Trump’s wars, tariffs, deportations, and broader economic instability are affecting working people, and what it means for people here in Illinois and across the country.

_Join us on Zoom to dig into the numbers, cut through the spin, and talk about what we can do together. Come join us, catch up on this year’s U.S. & Illinois economic news, and share your thoughts_

Sorting the Firehose of Information:

Thursday at 5 pm Central / 6pm eastern

_Every Thursday at 5:00 p.m. CDT, Sorting Soup—our Thursday edition—is a weekly space to make sense of the nonstop firehose of news. Together, we sort through major headlines, court decisions, policy developments, cultural moments, and the stories competing for our attention. Bring your questions, useful context, and curiosity as we distinguish what is urgent, what is meaningful, and what deserves a closer look._

Sorting Soup is also a place to process what the news brings up. Through honest conversation and critical thinking, we make room for frustration, concern, hope, and determination—while connecting national developments to the realities in our own communities. The aim is not simply to keep up, but to leave with clearer shared understanding and a stronger sense of what we can do next.

Each gathering continues our focus on Self-Care as Radical Resistance. We will share a short self-care message recognizing that rest, boundaries, connection, nourishment, and care for our well-being are not distractions from meaningful work; they are how we sustain ourselves and one another for the long haul.

Through the November 3 midterm elections, we will also emphasize community-facing voter engagement. We’ll highlight tabling opportunities, explore adaptable voter-education tools, and identify practical calls to action each week—from sharing trustworthy information and inviting neighbors into the work to helping build the participation essential to a healthy democracy.

Two sessions on Sunday

A) Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle

B) This Is the Plan* by Ben Wikler

Sundays Bookclub @9am & 5pm central – ZOOM

This fall, The Ladle & Literature Society—also known as the Sorting Soup Book Club—offers two routes into the work of sustaining ourselves and building power. Beginning Sunday, August 30, we’ll gather around books that take both the personal toll of organizing and the practical work of winning seriously. Choose the conversation that best meets the moment—or join both, because the mess is multifaceted and, frankly, so are we.

Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle

*Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle* by Emily and Amelia Nagoski explores why stress lingers in our bodies long after the immediate crisis has passed, and how we can interrupt the cycle through rest, connection, movement, boundaries, and joy. Organizers are regularly asked to absorb urgency, outrage, grief, and other people’s needs; without ways to process that load, exhaustion becomes a predictable political outcome. This discussion is for anyone who wants to build a practice of care sturdy enough to support the long haul—because a movement cannot afford to treat its people as disposable.

Join *Burnout* on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. CST, beginning August 30, or *This Is the Plan* on Sundays at 5:00 p.m. CST.
